JUSTIN Kluivert will have to watch his country at the Euros via television after being left out of the Netherlands’ squad for this summer’s tournament – but the winger is looking forward to coming back to Cherries refreshed.

The Netherlands announced their preliminary 30-player squad for the tournament in Germany last week, with Kluivert missing out despite a debut Premier League season that included seven goals in 32 appearances.

Former Cherry Nathan Ake has been selected in the provisional squad, with the Manchester City centre-back almost a certainty to be a part of the final 26-man list for the tournament.

Kluivert made his debut for his country of birth as a substitute in a friendly against Portugal as an 18-year-old in March 2018.

The winger went on to pick up his latest cap six months later, again a substitute in a friendly, coming off the bench against Peru in September 2018.

However, the Ajax academy product has not been called up since September 2019, where Kluivert was an unused substitute for the Netherlands’ Euro qualifiers against Germany and Estonia.

Speaking before the Netherlands announced their squad for the Euros, Kluivert told the Daily Echo when asked if had any contact from his international side: “No, but I'm open of course.

“It's the most beautiful thing, to play for your country.

“If they need me, I will be there. And if not, I'll enjoy some time off and come fresh back to Bournemouth.”

The Netherlands face stiff opposition in Group D at Euro 2024.

They first face Poland on Sunday, June 16, before going up against World Cup runners up France on Friday, June 21. Austria are their final opponents, rounding off the group stage on Tuesday, June 25.

Asked how he felt the Dutch would fare at this summer’s tournament, Kluivert continued: “I think they will do very good.

“A lot of players were injured but are coming back now.

“So I think the squad is quite fit, everybody's available.

“So I think their chances are good to be fair. Let’s see.

“I will watch it on TV, if I have time!”

Although twice capped by the Netherlands, Kluivert remains eligible for other countries as he has only played in friendlies.

Kluivert is eligible for Suriname and Curacao through his father’s side of the family, with his grandfather Kenneth capped three times by Suriname.

Patrick Kluivert, Justin’s legendary father, made 79 appearances for the Netherlands, scoring 40 goals.
