With seven games to go in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, AFC Bournemouth have 41 points.

That is just five shy of their best ever tally, recorded by Eddie Howe’s 2016/17 side that finished ninth.

Whilst matching the final league position may be too tall ask for the current crop of Cherries, winger Marcus Tavernier stated this teammates were targeting a piece of club history.

Cherries could still theoretically qualify for European competition via the league, but when asked about it by BBC Radio Solent, Tavernier replied:

“Mathematically it’s an option, but our goal is to achieve that club record for points.

“That’s what we’re aiming for. And then if we get that, we’re over the moon, but we just keep climbing each week, we have to keep fighting, taking it game by game.”

Although a hamstring issue is now likely to keen the Leeds-born attacker on the sidelines for some time, Tavernier broke his goal drought with what proved to be a consolatory effort in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Luton.

Tavernier continued: “I know I haven’t been getting in and around the goals too much this season, and it was a bit of a relief when the ball went into the back of the net.

“On a personal level I am happy for myself, but at the same time we wanted to come here and carry on pushing up the table.

"We want to break the club’s record for points, and we all know that’s our goal - we’re trying to achieve it.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult test, but we wanted to come away with all three points.”
