LUTON Town boss Rob Edwards praised Cherries’ “power, quality and skill” as well as a “brilliant attitude” to overturn a three-goal deficit at Vitality Stadium.

Edwards’s relegation battlers looked set to move out of the bottom three, leading 3-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Tahith Chong, Chiedozie Ogbene and Ross Barkley.

However, Cherries stormed back after the restart, with Antoine Semenyo’s brace sealing a 4-3 win, after earlier goals from Dominic Solanke and Illia Zabarnyi.

It marks just the third time in the Premier League’s 32-year history a team who have trailed by three goals at half-time have gone on to win.

Asked how the game got away from his team, Edwards said: “I feel we didn’t defend in duels well enough. There were some individual mistakes that we didn’t cope well enough with in the second half.

“We gave them encouragement with the early goal in the second half. The crowd really got up then and we weren’t quite able to cope with that barrage, that forward running power that they’ve got.

“So I’m really, really frustrated.

“All four goals can be avoided. There’s three or four mistakes for each one.

“We put ourselves in such a good position to win a Premier League game, never mind get a point, which is really difficult for us to do. To be sat here talking about a defeat is tough.”

He added: “I’m angry, upset and a little bit numb.

“We performed really well in the first half. A team have then played really well themselves and found a way to win, so credit to Bournemouth.

“There’s obviously areas that we can be better, but they showed some brilliant football, power, quality and skill as well to win the game.

“That hurts to say, but it was a mixture of us being poor in certain areas and brilliant play and a brilliant attitude from them to find the way.

“These freak things can happen in football sometimes.

“There was some really good play from Bournemouth. I know people will say ‘oh, it’s only Bournemouth’, but Bournemouth have got some really good players here as well.

“There was some brilliant play from them and we just couldn’t quite cope in those key periods.

“I thought at 3-3 the game had settled for a little bit and I thought we’d actually weathered the storm and a set-piece or something like that, which we did have, we might’ve been able to get a grip back on the game.

“But the way we conceded the fourth goal was really, really disappointing.”

Discussing his side’s impressive performance in the first 45 minutes, Edwards said: “We played some really good football and we always look like we can score goals in this league.

“That’s normally, for teams in our position, the hardest thing.

“We look a threat. We’re playing some really good stuff. The plan was working well.

“The bit for us now is obviously the other end. That’s why we’re in the position we’re in, obviously we’ve conceded too many goals.

“But our goals for is a good way up the league.

“So it’s quite clear where we need to try and improve and fix up. That’s got to be a big area of our focus now. But the first half was very good.”
