THIRD time was the charm for Hamworthy Rec after they finally completed their FA Vase clash with Wells City, winning 2-1.

Goals in each half from Lewis McMurdo and Brian Foulger gave Rec the lead away in Somerset, although the hosts threatened a grandstand finish when they pulled one back late on via Harry Warwick.

But Recreation held on to continue their debut FA Vase run, setting up a fourth-round trip to the Channel Islands to face Jersey Bulls.

After the original fixture at Magna Road was abandoned due to fog at half-time two weeks ago, the rearranged match was postponed due to weather.

That saw the fixture reversed, with Wells City hosting at their Athletic Ground home.

Just before the half-hour mark the away side would take the lead, McMurdo opening scores.

Recreation would have to wait until the second period to stretch their lead further, Foulger adding the second around the hour mark.

A nervy finish was set up when the hosts halved the deficit via Warwick, but there were no further goals as Recreation reached the fourth round of the competition.

Aside from advancing in the competition, Recreation receive £1,125 for their third-round win.

Wells earnt £350 as commiseration for their efforts.

Fourth round ties are set to be staged the weekend of Saturday, January 13 2024.

Winning sides at the next stage will be awarded £1,875, whilst losing sides will be given £600.

Jersey are currently third in the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties Football League Premier Division South, plying their trade a tier above Rec.

Recreation are second in the Wessex League Division One, two points behind leaders Downton with a game in hand.

They return to action on Saturday, December 23, when they visit Verwood Town in league action.
