DORSET star Lee Cutler said having Shane and Barry McGuigan roaring him on felt “surreal” as he clinched the English super-welterweight title.

The 27-year-old recorded a unanimous points victory over Londoner Kingsley Egbunike, in an exciting contest at the BIC.

Two judges scored the fight 97-93 to Cutler, with the other going 96-95 to ‘Chaos’.

Verwood-raised Cutler was left with mixed emotions after the fight, pleased with the victory but frustrated not to have achieved a stoppage win. He also suffered a nasty cut above his left eye in round 10, which will delay his return to the ring.

It was Cutler’s first fight since changing trainers from Kev Thorniley, who was watching ringside, to Josh Pritchard, who works in the McGuigan gym in London.

Near the corner, Barry and Shane McGuigan were seen up on their feet giving Cutler their vocal support.

Asked what that was like to experience, Chaos told the Daily Echo: “Surreal. Shane at the end of the fight, how buzzing he was for me, he’s one of the best coaches in the world.

“Obviously my coach Pritchard has been with him for years. So it’s just absolutely mental.”

Reflecting on the performance against Egbunike, which extends his professional record to 14-1, Cutler said: “I just felt I had him hurt at times, just didn’t step on the gears and get him out of there.

“Apparently they were going to chuck the towel in, late in the last round.

“I felt in control at all times. I just felt I didn’t step through the gears when I had him hurt.

“It’s stuff we’ve been working on in the gym, but you live and learn and go again.”

Asked if that is understandable, given the new working relationship between himself and Pritchard, Cutler replied: “Exactly. It is going to take time. But it will happen for me.”

Also on the night at the BIC, there was a big stoppage win for Olympic silver medallist Ben Whittaker, against Italian Stiven Leonetti Dredhaj, as well as convincing points victories for fellow Brits Michael McKinson, Francesca Hennessy, Lauren Price and Lewis Edmondson.
