ANDONI Iraola says Luis Sinisterra “deserved” his first Cherries start and was left “happy” with the winger’s performance at Selhurst Park.

Sinisterra, on loan from Leeds United, had previously made seven appearances for Cherries, all as a substitute, prior to starting against Crystal Palace.

The 24-year-old played a key role in the opening goal, flicking a Ryan Christie corner on for Marcos Senesi to head home.

Sinisterra was withdrawn for the final 12 minutes, replaced by Dango Ouattara, before Kieffer Moore sealed the 2-0 victory.

In the build-up, Iraola said he had a decision to make over whether to stick with a settled team who had been performing so well, or freshen things up during a busy week of fixtures.

In the end, he made just one alteration from Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa, bringing Sinisterra in for Marcus Tavernier.

Discussing his thought process, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “It is difficult, whenever you are coming from a good performance.

“After Aston Villa, it was difficult to make changes. We decided to give continuity.

“I had it clear I wanted to give Sinisterra a first start, because he was doing so well coming on as a sub.

“I think he deserved to play from the beginning.

“Also I think it is good for Tavernier, because he did an amazing job the other day, he ran a lot and needed some rest.”

Quizzed on the Colombia international’s performance, Iraola added: “I think he is much better aerially than probably everyone thinks.

“We can see it in training. He also was part of the goal we scored against Newcastle, from another corner.

“I am happy because he has contributed, not only on the goal, but did a good job defensively.

“It is not an easy game (at Selhurst Park), it is tough, because they have very good individuals.

“He was helping his full-back. I am very happy for him.”

Senesi’s goal was the second Cherries have netted from set pieces during their four-game unbeaten run, Dominic Solanke finding the net from a corner in the 2-0 win over Newcastle United.

Asked if much work had gone into the routine which delivered the opening goal against Roy Hodgson’s Eagles, Iraola said: “Yes. We have scored two similar goals now from corners.

“Lately I think we are improving, we are creating more chances.

“It is good, because in the end, especially in these kind of games, to score first is so important.

“To score with a set piece is something you can add to the team and not only be dependent on open play.”

Cherries have a quick turnaround, going to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Saturday (3pm).
