CHERRIES boss Andoni Iraola believed Marcus Tavernier got his reward after the winger opened his account for the season with a double at Sheffield United.

Goals in either half from the former Middlesbrough man sandwiched Justin Kluivert’s strike, Oli McBurnie’s late goal scant consolation for the Blades as Cherries won 3-1 in Yorkshire.

After scoring five times in his debut top-flight season, Tavernier had gone nine games this term without finding the back of the net.

There was also a first league goal of the campaign for Kluivert, who became the youngest player to score in all of Europe’s top six leagues, namely the Premier League, Ligue 1, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and the Eredivisie.

The strikes from Kluivert and Tavernier proved Cherries have goalscoring potential all over the pitch according to Iraola, following recent suggestions that his side were too reliant on the goals of Dominic Solanke.

Discussing the goalscorers, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “Today also we added Justin scoring in the league, and Tav scoring two goals.

"I think we have talent there, I think we have goals there, behind Dom.

“We were having the chances.

“They were not scoring the goals and I think it is good for them confidence-wise to come here and to score in such an important game.”

Tavernier missed the opening month of the season following an injury sustained in pre-season training, providing an assist on his return away at Brentford.

That was the last goal involvement the 24-year-old had produced, although Iraola felt his recent performances merited goal contributions.

Iraola continued: “He was playing really well in the last games, but he had some chances he didn’t finish, against Burnley and Newcastle.

“But it was a matter of time, because he has the quality.

“It’s good he gets the reward, because he is contributing in such different ways to the team.

“I am really happy for him.”
