HAMWORTHY United cruised into the second qualifying round of the FA Trophy, sweeping aside Melksham Town 3-0 at Bob Lucas Stadium.

Melksham, unbeaten in the league this season, sit six points ahead of Hammers in Southern Division One South, but Dan Cann’s man turned the form table on its head.

Will Fletcher gave Hammers the early lead inside four minutes, volleying home from a Sean Wright cross.

Cam Munn almost doubled the tally, before the visitors saw a goal chalked off due to an offside flag.

Hamworthy were 2-0 up by half-time, Eastleigh loanee Seung-Woo Yang’s effort finding its way in off the post.

Midway through the second half the win was sealed, Fletcher teeing up Sam Griffin to score.

Goalkeeper Kai Storr had to be alert to make two impressive saves in the closing stages to preserve his clean sheet.

Hammers will welcome Larkhall Athletic to their temporary Weymouth home in the next round, between 22-24 September.

Meanwhile, new boss Ollie Cherrett watched on from the stands as Bashley also made it through, edging past Evesham United on penalties.

It was confirmed on Friday Cherrett had left his post at Christchurch to replace Matt Tubbs at Bash, after he departed to join Poole Town earlier in the week.

Paul Reid took interim charge for the FA Trophy tie and saw his patched-up side on the back foot during the first half.

Levi Steele had an early effort ruled out for offside, but Evesham did take the lead on 25 minutes. Debutant Felix Miles teed up Steele to find the net again, this one counting.

Bashley improved in the second half, Toby Bailey going close before debutant Kaya Tshaka, brought in from Eastleigh, rounded off a neat move involving Bailey and Brett Williams.

The shootout swung both ways, before Bash eventually prevailed 8-7 on spot-kicks.

Bashley will head to Cribbs in the second qualifying round.

Wimborne are out, beaten on penalties after a six-goal thriller at Exmouth Town.

Ten-man Magpies were on top for large spells, leading both 2-0 and 3-1, before being pegged back and losing on spot-kicks.

Tim Sills’s men took the early lead, Lewis Beale’s deflected strike wrong-footing goalkeeper Andrew Sowden-Bird.

But Wimborne’s hopes were dashed when Oakley Hanger was shown red for his protests after his side were not awarded a penalty when Jez Bedford went over in the box.

Despite being a man light, Wimborne doubled their lead midway through the second half through Beale, after Harry Baker’s initial effort had been saved.

Exmouth worked their way back into the contest in the closing stages, reducing the arrears through a Jordan Harris penalty, only for Baker to quickly make it 3-1.

That is how the score stayed until the final five minutes, where the hosts netted twice through Bradley Cox and Ben Steer.

Exmouth won 5-3 on penalties, Jack Lovell the only man to miss from 12 yards.
