POOLE Town handed Dorchester their first win of the season, losing 2-1 in the first Dorset derby of the season.

Shaq Gwengwe struck 10 minutes from time before a Jordan Barnett free-kick in stoppage time to confirm the result.

A late Will Spetch header proved scant consolation for the hosts.

Tony Lee and Wes Fogden were both available again having served one-match suspensions against Harrow Borough on Saturday, although a knock meant the latter started the game on the bench.

Restored to the starting line up, Lee led the line at the expense of Destiny Ojo, whilst regular goalkeeper Luke Cairney missed out due to work commitments, Will Butler his replacement in between the sticks.

Poole took a while to start fashioning chances, but eventually they kept the Dorchester goal under constant siege without drawing blood.

The hosts looked most dangerous at set pieces, captain Jamie Whisken, Will Spetch, and Lee all going close with headers.

Dolphins’ best chance of the half fell to Lee inside the box, the striker only able to flash an effort over the bar.

After the break, Poole brought on further attacking power in the form of Toby Holmes, Alefe Santos, and Destiny Ojo to bolster their hunt for a goal.

But it would have an opposite effect, Ojo losing the ball with a heavy touch in the middle of the park and allowing Gwengwe to go one-on-one with Butler, sitting the keeper down before rolling the ball home to effectively win Dorchester the game.

But as Poole chucked more and more men forward, the more vulnerable they became at the back.

A dangerous Dorchester counter could only be stopped by a foul on the edge of the area on Gwengwe by Harvey Wright, which allowed Jordan Barnett to step up and fire a free-kick past Butler, confirming the Magpies’ first win of the season.

Spetch then bundled home at a corner to restore little pride for Poole.
