ANDONI Iraola admits Gaetano Castrovilli would have been a “good signing” for Cherries, adding: “We need help in this position.”

Cherries had agreed a fee of around £10million with Fiorentina for the Italian midfielder, who travelled to England on Friday.

Castrovilli was part of the squad which won the delayed Euro 2020 tournament, beating England in the final at Wembley in the summer of 2021.

However, the 26-year-old’s medical examinations were deemed not satisfactory, the Italy international having surgery on a serious knee injury last year.

In a statement, Serie A club Fiorentina said: “ACF Fiorentina can confirm that Gaetano Castrovilli will return to Italy as he was deemed not to have passed the medical tests carried out ahead of a proposed transfer to Bournemouth.

“The player will resume training with Fiorentina on Monday having passed all the necessary tests to play competitive sport in Italy.”

Discussing Castrovilli’s failed move to Cherries, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “I think we need help in this position. The club knows.

“I think he was a good signing for us, because he could help us in the number eight position.

“I think he is good, defensively and offensively. But he didn’t pass the medical, so we have to move on and go for another option.”

Asked if he is hopeful of making new additions ahead of his side’s opening Premier League game on Saturday, Iraola added: “The club is going to try to sign new players this week, because we have some areas that obviously still lack some players probably, with injuries in the middle and full-back positions.

“But we also want to make the right decisions, not because we need to sign as soon as we can, we are going to sign a player we don’t want.

“We have to balance everything and take the best decisions.”
