CHERRIES boss Andoni Iraola is currently undecided on his captain for the season.

Predecessor Gary O’Neil made the decision to swap captains midway through the 2022-23 campaign, stripping Lloyd Kelly of the armband and appointing Neto in his place in February.

Aside from Kelly’s season being hampered by injury,  the decision to appoint the goalkeeper as skipper was largely fuelled by his standing in the dressing room, the Brazilian knowing multiple languages that are spoken by different members of the squad.

However, Iraola is yet to chose his captain for the new season, with Neto donning the armband when he has played during pre-season.

Adam Smith, who is Cherries’ longest serving player and was named vice-captain under Scott Parker and O’Neil, is another candidate for the captaincy.

Asked if he was considering swapping captains, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “It's something that we haven't talked about that.

“We will do maybe after the pre-season games.

“Once maybe not all the players (have arrived), because all the players will be here September 1.

“Maybe it's too late, we should do it before.

“But it's something that we will decide and we will transmit to the players probably after the Lorient game.”
