WIMBORNE Town have snapped up experienced goalkeeper Ross Flitney from Eastleigh.

The 39-year-old began his youth career with Arsenal and Fulham, before moving on in 2005 to feature in the Football League with Barnet.

Another spell in League Two would follow with Gillingham in 2011-12, but Flitney has generally settled into non-league life during his two-decade spell of first-team football.

The Hitchin-born stopper has featured for the likes of Grays Athletic, Dover Athletic, Whitehawk and Bromley, but the majority of his appearances came during his first spell at Eastleigh.

Flitney returned to the National League Spitfires in 2017, but has largely been restricted to cup appearances in more recent years, as well as taking on coaching responsibilities.

Southern League Division One South club Wimborne had been on the lookout for a new keeper, after Shane Murphy departed to join Shaftesbury earlier this summer.

Boss Tim Sills said: “Securing Ross’s signing in goal is a massive coup for a club at our level.

“His experience, leadership and undoubted ability will be huge in the changing room this season.

“He has great pedigree as well as determined ambition to be successful this year and his example will be invaluable for our younger keepers to learn and grow from as well.”
