GARY O’Neil has made phone calls with PGMOL chief Howard Webb a part of his weekly routine.

Cherries’ head coach has had multiple conversations with ex-Premier League referee Webb over the course of the season to discuss controversial decisions that have gone against his side.

Last weekend there was incredulity as Jefferson Lerma was struck in the face by Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen at a corner, which neither match official Michael Salisbury or VAR Andy Madley spotting anything wrong for the incident.

Webb subsequently apologised to O’Neil, before appearing on Sky Sports the following evening and discussing decisions made my referees throughout the 2022/23 season.

Another incident that left Cherries incensed was the penalty awarded against Marcos Senesi for a supposed foul on Ivan Toney in a defeat to Brentford. The decision was discussed on Monday Night Football, with Webb admitting the officials had made another mistake there.

Asked how his latest conversation with Webb went, O’Neil replied: “My weekly chat with Howard!

“Yeah, we do that most Sundays now.

“My Sundays generally look like: watch the little boy play football, speak to Howard Webb, have Sunday roast, start to prep for the next game.

“So, yeah, Howard was yeah, he agreed it should have been a sending off and was surprised it was missed.

“And to be fair to Howard, he is very open, very honest, every time I speak to him, takes his time to speak to me.

“Similar to the Bednarek one recently at Southampton, Howard sort of disagreed with the outcome, thought it should have been a penalty at Southampton for us.

“Felt like there should have been some action against Andersen at the weekend.

“So I understand mistakes, they can happen, and especially on subjective decisions like that, but, this season seems like there's been a lot go against us.

“People say they even themselves out over the course of a season.

“It hasn't definitely for us this season, but hopefully they even themselves over the course over of two, and we get a good few go our way next season.”
