CHERRIES development squad suffered late heartbreak at Fratton Park, falling to a Basingstoke injury-time winner in the Hampshire Senior Cup.

Mark Scott proved impenetrable in the Basingstoke goal, the keeper making a string of saves to keep Cherries out.

As the full-time whistle approached, it appeared the two sides would have to be separated by penalties.

But Basingstoke winger Bradley Wilson proved the difference, striking deep into injury time to win his side an eighth Hampshire Senior Cup.

Cherries enjoyed a host of quality chances in the first period, with Daniel Adu-Adjei causing havoc inside the box within the opening minute.

Skipper Ben Greenwood and skilful winger Michael Dacosta Gonzalez both saw fine stops from Scott deny them an opener, sending both sides into the break level at 0-0.

The second period was a more even affair, with Basingstoke properly testing Will Dennis for the first time, the Cherries keeper at full stretch to deny Sam Argent.

Greenwood was then well placed to clear off the line, before Cherries went close in similar fashion up the other end, Basingstoke’s Billy Upton blocking Ben Winterburn’s goal bound effort.

Alan Connell’s young side enjoyed the lion share of possession but were unable to make it count, with the two teams deadlocked and seemingly heading for a penalty shootout.

But a hopeful ball forward from Basingstoke allowed Wilson to cut inside from the wing, curling past Dennis in the 95th minute to win his side the cup.
