DANNY King is looking to keep up his impeccable team trophy record since taking over the captaincy at Pirates and insisted: “You can see why people want to come to Poole.”

The British star guided his troops to a league and cup double in the form of the SGB Championship and Knockout Cup last term - and has already defended the latter in 2022.

Pirates are set to go into the first leg of the play-off final against Leicester at Wimborne Road tonight (7.30pm), with the second leg set for Beaumont Park on Saturday.

The two sides are also still set to compete in the final of the Championship Jubilee League competition.

Owner Matt Ford earlier this month claimed Poole’s class of 2022 were “on the verge of being the best ever Pirates team”.

Put to him he had not lost a team trophy since arriving at Pirates, King told the Daily Echo: ““No pressure, eh?! It’s fantastic and I love it here.

“You can see why people want to come to Poole. I don’t know what it is. They are a successful club and when you ride for Poole you want to win and are expected to win.

“That just builds character. I think it just lifts everyone up. Certainly, I have enjoyed my past year here and we have a chance to win another trophy of the three.”

Leicester stunned Pirates 47-43 at Wimborne Road earlier this season, before Poole hammered them 60-30 at the same venue last month.

The 36-year-old added: “We have been working hard all year. We had a little blip mid-season but we’ve bounced back and I feel this team can go all the way, for sure.

“It’s not going to be easy, obviously. Leicester are a solid team and obviously they are the only team to beat us here for the past few years.

“I think last time we proved a point that how we should be riding here, we are more than capable.”
