FORMER Cherries boss Harry Redknapp has nominated goalkeeper Neto in his Premier League team of the week – describing the Brazilian as ‘Gary O’Neil’s first-choice goalkeeper’.

In his Premier League team of the week for BetVictor, Redknapp routinely picks out his best performers from across the weekend’s action.

It is the first time since October 2020 the 31-year-old shot stopper has started four consecutive league games, with his time at Barcelona seeing him largely used as back up to Germany international Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Neto had been named as the top-performing goalkeeper in the final game before the international break by Alan Shearer, and again the former Barcelona man has been recognised, this time by former Tottenham boss Redknapp, whose grandson and namesake Harry Redknapp plays for Cherries’ under-18s.

Explaining his reasoning for plumping for Neto, Redknapp shared: “This lad looks every inch Gary O'Neil's first-choice goalkeeper.

“In another assured performance, he made a great save early on from Mikkel Damsgaard.

“He has a good presence, and his handling is top-class.”

Poole-born Ben White was also named for his display in the North London Derby, whilst Manchester City duo Phil Foden and Erling Haaland were shoo-ins following their hat-tricks against Manchester United.

Brighton’s Leonardo Trossard also bagged a treble and thus was included, whilst Conor Coady, Thilo Kehrer, and Thiago Silva were the three other defenders chosen.

Miguel Almiron and Joe Willock helped Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United to a win over Fulham, with the former scoring twice, the latter providing one assist for the Paraguayan and another for ex-Cherry Callum Wilson.

Neto (Cherries), White (Arsenal), Kehrer (West Ham), Coady (Everton), Silva (Chelsea), Trossard (Brighton), Foden (Manchester City), Almiron (Newcastle United), Willock (Newcastle United), Haaland (Manchester City), Jesus (Arsenal)
