CHERRIES have confirmed their fifth addition of the window with the signing of Argentinian international Marcos Senesi – but who is the 25-year-old?

A central defender by trade, Senesi arrives at Cherries from Dutch giants Feyenoord for a fee believed to be in the region of €15 million, although it is officially undisclosed.

Starting out with San Lorenzo, Senesi was described as one of the “undisputed figures” of the club’s successful youth teams, once scoring 10 goals in a season thanks to his heading ability at corners.

A cultured defender comfortable on the ball yet with enough about him to compete aerially, Senesi has long had admirers from across Europe.

Last season he won 70% of tackles he attempted, making 72 clearances and 52 interceptions in 32 Eredivisie games.

The left-footer arrived in the Netherlands three years ago from San Lorenzo in his native Argentina, going on to make 116 appearances for the Rotterdam outfit.

He missed just two games as the Dutch side reached the final of the first ever Europa Conference League, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 defeat to Jose Mourinho’s Roma.

During his time in the Netherland’s second biggest city, Senesi played under Dick Advocaat and Arne Slot, recording two third placed finishes in a competitive Eredivisie.

A fan favourite in Rotterdam, he picked up the nickname ‘El Gladiador’ for his battling and ferocious displays at the back.

His performances in Europe earnt him international recognition, receiving a call up to Argentina’s senior team for the first time this summer.

With Italian heritage, he was also eligible to represent the Azzurri, but instead decided to turn down the European nation in favour of representing his country of birth.

Coincidentally, Italy played Argentina over the summer in the Finalissima, a match between the winners of the EUROs, and the Copa America.

During the game at Wembley, Senesi was an unused substitute for Argentina, but he made his debut in the same international window, keeping a cleansheet as Leo Messi scored all five goals in a 5-0 rout over minnows Estonia.
