DOLPHINS manager Tom Killick was pleased that his side’s friendly win over Weymouth was played with “enough edge”.

Summer signing Toby Holmes produced a first-half strike that proved the difference in a 1-0 win at the BlackGold Stadium, as Southern League Poole went toe-to-toe with their National South neighbours.

Despite the game serving as a pre-season fixture and Weymouth’s new look side yet to face Poole competitively, the game was played with a bit of needle.

Niggly fouls and shirt-pulling from both sides replicated the physical nature of league fixtures, without threat of the game boiling over.

Speaking to the Daily Echo afterwards, Killick began: “I liked the game - perhaps Weymouth thought it was a little bit more physical than they ideally would like, but it was a proper game.

“It didn't just seem like a meaningless friendly in certain aspects. There was enough in it, I feel, for both sides.

“Enough edge in it, in a way both sides would want. That's my view, certainly.”

Poole came into the game with just a day’s rest after losing 3-1 to Cherries’ under-23 side, with Killick viewing the gauntlet of games as an exercise in building match fitness.

“If you think about it, Bournemouth on Thursday night was an absolute sort of test for us physically because we never had the ball,” he restarted.

“I mean, it was horrible for the players to play from a footballing perspective, but very good for them physically.

“And then (against Weymouth) to come here, baking hot day, two days later, they might not be particularly happy about it in terms of the schedule of it, but I feel I hope it stands us in good stead.”

Dolphins face further Dorset opposition on Tuesday night, when they travel cross-county to face Wessex Premier outfit Shaftesbury.
