KEEPER Mark Travers revealed how he wanted to revert to his original Cherries squad number of 42 this season – and hinted at keeping it for years to come.

The Republic of Ireland international originally donned the number, when making his Premier League debut against Tottenham in May 2019.

He switched to 23 at Cherries last season, as well as wearing the number one jersey while briefly on loan at Swindon Town.

But the Maynooth-born star opted to grab the number 42 once again for 2021-22, sealing the Championship’s golden glove award on the way to Cherries’ promotion to the Premier League.

“I have always wanted to be 42,” he said, when asked earlier this season about reuniting with his first Cherries senior squad number.

“I changed to 23 last season but I just wanted to go back to the 42 – I quite like it. I am enjoying having that and it’s good to have it back on I suppose.

“Maybe, you could say a superstition, but I just had it on my debut and the season before in the Prem. It was just something I went back to.

“I know it’s only a number but I feel like it looks good – I’ll stick to that for years to come maybe.”
