DAVID Brooks thanked fans for "thousands of messages of support" as he battled against cancer, describing the past two weeks as "fantastic".

The Cherries star released a statement on Tuesday afternoon confirming he was now cancer free, having been diagnosed with stage II Hodgkin lymphoma in October of last year.

A few hours later, the 24-year-old was on the pitch celebrating with the rest of his teammates as Cherries secured their return to the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest thanks to a late Kieffer Moore winner.

"I'm absolutely buzzing," Brooks told Sky Sports.

"It's been a fantastic two weeks for myself, with the great news of the diagnosis and things like that and I can finally put that to bed.

"And then to watch the boys clinch promotion is obviously fantastic. The lads have deserved it all season.

"Obviously it was a bit nervy towards the end and Forest have done really well and they've deserved to probably be in the situation they're in now. But I'm so happy for the boys.

"They've managed to cling on and big Kieffer Moore could send us back to the Premier League!"

Discussing the support he has received from the football family during his recovery, Wales international Brooks added: "I'd just like to say, I don't think I have to, but I do apologise for all the messages I probably missed.

"Obviously when the first diagnosis happened and I put it on social media, obviously I wasn't in an ideal place.

"But there was hundreds and hundreds, maybe even thousands of messages of support coming through.

"So I'd just like to say thank you to everyone that has sent me a message, on Instagram, Twitter or even sent me a message via mobile and things like that.

"I couldn't really get through them all and obviously I had my treatment.

"But thank you for all the messages of support I've had over the past couple of hours since it got announced (about being cancer free). Obviously just delighted."
