HOT prospect Sam Vokes could have played his last game in Cherries colours, with the striker believed to be the subject of a six-figure transfer bid.

A Daily Echo source claimed yesterday afternoon that one club had come in for the Welsh under-21 target man with an offer believed to be in the region of £175,000.

It is understood the bid has come from fellow League One strugglers Crewe Alexandra. Reports yesterday morning hinted that the Lymington-based star was being lined up by the south Cheshire outfit.

Alex boss Steve Holland admitted his club had submitted a bid for a forward, but he did not name the player in question.

"We were expecting to hear from his club on Tuesday, but the team involved were playing, so that might be delayed," Holland told the Stoke Sentinel.

"We're optimistic, although it has been a frustrating 24 hours. Hopefully, we'll get some luck and have a chance to speak to the player."

The teenager, who has progressed through the youth ranks at Cherries, has been in fine form of late. He scored and had a hand in two other goals as Cherries beat Luton Town 4-3 last Tuesday, before contributing to all three goals during the team's impressive 3-1 victory over Port Vale on Saturday.

Another club thought to have taken a look at Vokes were Championship high-fliers Bristol City but, when contacted by the Daily Echo yesterday, boss Gary Johnson confirmed there had been no bid from the Robins.

Cherries manager Kevin Bond played down the speculation, saying the Dean Court club had not received any offers for Vokes "at this moment in time".

But with Doncaster Rovers also believed to be monitoring the youngster's situation, the chances of Vokes leaving Dean Court before tonight's transfer deadline appear to be increasing.

Bond was unavailable for further comment last night.
