MARK Travers revealed how he came to be known as 'El Pulpo' by teammate Jefferson Lerma.

Following a scintillating run of form, Travers was voted as man-of-the-match by Cherries fans for four consecutive matches after wins over Barnsley, Birmingham, Blackpool and Stoke across January and February.

During that run, goalkeeper Travers pulled off a string of vital stops, to keep Cherries on course for promotion.

Having collected his man-of-the-match trophies, the Republic of Ireland international clutched all four at once to pose for a photo, which was shared on Cherries' social media.

Upon seeing that photo on Instagram, Travers's teammate Lerma posted 'El Pulpo', Spanish for 'the octopus' in the comments, alongside an emoji of the eight-limbed mollusc.

Asked if that nickname had come out of the blue from Spanish-speaking Lerma, Travers told the Daily Echo: "Just before, he showed me on his phone, on Google Translate actually!

"He was trying to get the translation, which was funny. But it was good fun by Jeff."

Asked if he has bought himself a cabinet to keep all his trophies, having also added the Cherries player of the month award to his collection, Travers added: "I’ve put them in the sitting room on a little table.

"It’s nice to have those and look back on, definitely."

Travers could collect some more trophies in the coming weeks. Cherries are still seeking to clinch promotion back to the Premier League, while Travers is in the running to win the Championship's golden glove.

Awarded to the goalkeeper who keeps the most clean sheets throughout the campaign, Cherries' stopper currently sits fourth in the list.

The Maynooth-born ace has kept 14 clean sheets in his 37 appearances, two behind leader Lee Nicholls of Huddersfield.

Asked if he is keeping an eye on that race, Travers said: "I think it’s not just me though, it’s the back-four unit as well.

"We take a lot of pride in clean sheets and I think it definitely would be great to push for that and try and get that.

"But if we get the three points in each of these last games, that’s all that matters, definitely."
