HAMWORTHY United took another huge step towards promotion with a narrow 2-1 win at Blackfield & Langley.

After their crucial midweek win against fellow promotion-hopefuls Shaftesbury had given them some breathing room, Wessex Premier leaders Hammers had to work hard against the mid-table Watersiders, battling back from a goal down.

Cam Munn could only find the side netting after being teed up by Dan Cann, before Blackfield took the lead on 36 minutes.

A long ball forward was miscued by Billy Walker, allowing George Over in to score.

Hammers levelled just three minutes into the second half. Cann picked out Munn, who this time made no mistake.

The turnaround was complete on 68 minutes. Steve Devlin's corner was superbly volleyed home by Harvey Wright.

Munn almost wrapped up the win but was denied by the woodwork and then Chia Khider on the line, before the visitors had a penalty clam waved away when Eddie Hodge appeared to have his shirt pulled by Owen Fee.

Matt Neale and Jamie Filkins also went close, but goalkeeper Nathaniel Taylor was equal to the tasks, as the game ended 2-1.

Second-placed Bashley are still seven points behind Hamworthy with four games to play, after thumping Fareham Town 5-0.

Former Cherries striker Matt Tubbs scored a hat-trick, while Adam Grange added a brace.

Brockenhurst slip to sixth after a 3-2 loss at AFC Stoneham. Second-half goals from Mitchell Speechley-Price and Addwell Chipangura were not enough for the Badgers.

Poppies were thumped 5-1 at home by Hamble, while Christchurch drew 0-0 at United Services Portsmouth.
