CHERRIES loanee Todd Cantwell has revealed that he will use all of his three promotion experiences – including one out in the Netherlands – to “get the club back where they belong”.

Norwich’s Cantwell, still a teenager at the time, went on his first loan spell after having made a senior debut as a substitute at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup, in January 2018.

Rather than head to a League One or Two side, the creative midfielder spent the remainder of the season on loan at Dutch division two outfit Fortuna Sittard – where he helped contribute to a famous campaign.

Fortuna had been in the Jupiler League since 2002, registering a previous three league finishes of 19th, 16th and 17th.

Cantwell played 10 times to close the season, losing just once, his substitute debut, and providing two goals and three assists as Fortuna landed a second-place finish and famous promotion to the Eredivisie.

“It was an amazing loan spell,” Cantwell told the Daily Echo, looking back.

“It’s something that probably swung me in the direction that I ended up going, which was very positive.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have three promotions, and one relegation, in my career so far which is a bit up and down. Football can be like that.”

He continued: “But I’ve got a bit of a saying, you can never get too high and you can never get too low.

“So for me, the important thing now is to get here, to get playing and to get the club back to where they should be.”

Cantwell has since followed that up with two promotions into the Premier League from the Championship, playing for parent club Norwich.

The 23-year-old is a two-time winner of the division in 2018-19 and 2020-21, playing an integral role with six goals in the most recent success.

Asked what it is that is needed in a squad to realise the ambition which head coach Scott Parker and everyone at Cherries hold, he responded: “I think it’s a confidence thing.

“I think an injection of new faces as well. I think in football sometimes things can just take a bit of a slow spin. It happens in every division all around the world, you go through a tough run of games.

“But the brilliant thing in the Championship is if you’ve got two or three games in a week and you win them all, you could be looking in a completely different position to what you were before.

“In the same sense, you lose one and you’re not so happy with your result.”

Cantwell added: “You’ve got a quick turnaround to then go and put it right. It’s a league that be very unforgiving but if things are going well, it can also be one of the best leagues to play.”
