MIDFIELDER Gavin Kilkenny held his hands up after Cherries were on the end of FA Cup humiliation against non-league Boreham Wood.

The National League side stuck a 38th-minute winner through Mark Ricketts at Vitality Stadium, the strike providing Luke Garrard’s side with a 1-0 success.

Kilkenny played 90 minutes of the cup exit – as well as taking the captain’s armband in the second half after Lewis Cook was replaced at half-time.

The Dubliner told the Daily Echo: “Obviously it’s really disappointing to lose 1-0. People are obviously going to have what they have to say but these things happen.

“It’s not an excuse, we know we should do a lot better, obviously.

“But we are not the first and we won’t be the last to lose one of them. We have to just recover now and put it right on Wednesday against Birmingham.”

Kilkenny’s misplaced clearance allowed Ricketts the chance to fire at goal and slot in the winner off the post on the south coast.

“It all happened quite quick,” said Kilkenny. “I was just trying to clear and slipped a bit. The boy finished it well, to be fair.

“It’s disappointing for me and disappointing for us but it is what it is.”

He added: “We knew it would be similar to Yeovil and it probably was. It’s difficult to be fair – it’s not as easy as it looks.

“We tried our best but they did well at what they do and we knew that’s what they do. To be honest, they are good at what they do.

“A lot of teams would struggle against that side of things.

“We had a lot of the ball, we probably weren’t clinical enough, didn’t create enough, we could have been a bit more progressive.”

Boss Scott Parker described the defeat as one of his lowest moments in football, when asked by the Daily Echo post-match.

Quizzed on what the head coach was like in the dressing room after, Kilkenny said: “We know ourselves.

“He doesn’t need to say much, we know as players it’s not good enough to lose that game. Obviously, we should be winning that.

“You’ve seen it before in the cup. We knew before there was a chance of this happening – we wanted to make sure it didn’t happen, unfortunately it did.

“It’s not easy for the manager to know what to say. We have just got to pick ourselves up and put it right on Wednesday because the league is the most important thing.”

Cherries host Birmingham in the Championship on Wednesday (7.45pm).
