All you need to know about Todd Cantwell

Norfolk-Born Todd Cantwell is a 23-year-old attacking midfielder for Norwich, whose prominence grew during a breakout Premier League season in 2019-20.

The talent first emerged the season before, where he made 24 appearances and scored once as the Canaries secured promotion from the Championship.

Then, he went on to score six goals in the top division and made 37 of the 38 matches. However, his last goal that year came on New Year’s Day.

Norwich failed to win any of their last 10 matches of the campaign and slumped to a bottom-placed finish.

Cantwell can play anywhere across the midfield but is a right-footed player who operates mostly as a left midfielder.

Where head coach Scott Parker would likely use him could vary, including through the middle and as part of the attack.

Early loan spell

Cantwell’s first steps in football were a loan period with Dutch second division side, Fortuna Sittard.

The move shows bravery and endeavour if nothing else, and he scored twice in 10 Jupiler League matches.

International pedigree

Cantwell featured briefly for the England under-21 side between 2019 and 2021, including a call-up to the 2021 European Championship for the age group after Mason Greenwood’s injury.

The latest

After starting the first three and being used as a substitute by then-manager Daniel Farke in the Premier League this campaign, Cantwell then didn’t feature again Dean Smith took over in November.

He started in a 2-1 win over Southampton but was subbed off at half-time. He has only made two appearances since.

In total for Norwich, he has scored 14 goals and provided 12 assists in 110 matches for Norwich’s first-team.

Cantwell is ultimately a two-time Championship title-winner and has witnessed what it takes for a squad to push through the gruelling 46-match season.
