SCOTT Mitchell had a debut to forget as he was swept aside 3-0 by Chris Landman at the PDC World Championship.

Scotty Dog, the winner of the 2015 BDO event at Lakeside, was strong favourite with bookmakers to progress past the Dutchman.

But Landman, also a debutant, pounced on a string of missed doubles from the Dorset ace throughout to take victory.

Mitchell, who kissed the Dorset flag on his shirt ahead of his walk-on, got off to a slow start and saw his throw broken in the opening leg.

The 51-year-old had the chance to hit straight back, but missed three darts to clinch the leg, allowing Landman back in to pinch it.

The Countryman then secured a clean sweep of the opening set. After both men missed darts, Mitchell returned to the board but squandered opportunities at double 10 and double five, allowing Landman back to pin double 10 himself.

After the break, two further misses at double from Mitchell saw him fall behind in the second set.

Landman kicked off the following leg with five perfect darts before closing it out.

And he took the second set 3-0, Mitchell again wasting two darts to win a leg.

A visibly frustrated Mitchell soon found himself of the brink of an early exit from the tournament as Landman reeled off his eighth leg in a row to move to within one of the match.

Then, Mitchell staged a mini recovery. He finally got off the mark for the match in the third leg of the third set, hitting tops with his 15th attempt at a double in the contest to avoid the whitewash.

With the crowd at Alexandra Palace cheering him on, Mitchell then reeled off another leg with a crisp 81 checkout, forcing the set to a decider.

But, despite having the darts, Mitchell could not keep the match alive as Landman took out 53 to progress to a second-round meeting with Ian White.
