BOSS Scott Parker said goalkeeper Mark Travers was on the “right trajectory” at Cherries but added: “There is still loads of work to be done.”

Travers has highly impressed since becoming first-choice in the Championship under Parker this season.

He has played 13 times in the league, conceding just eight goals and keeping seven clean sheets to help the Dorset side to the summit of the division.

Travers kept another clean sheet, having pulled off a fine save to deny Josh Koroma in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town.

Assessing the keeper’s start to the campaign, Parker said: “He came into the team young and I have seen someone grow, definitely in terms of his stature, his whole demeanour as a keeper and I think he is becoming more comfortable in his skin a little.

“He is still very, very young but he’s done very, very well. He is a talented keeper and I have seen someone improve massively.

“There is still loads to come from Travs, along with a lot of other players but certainly he is on the right trajectory in terms of where he needs to get to really, so I am pleased with that.”

Cherries had been linked with a loan move for a goalkeeper in the summer, the Daily Echo understands Freddie Woodman had agreed terms before being needed by Newcastle United.

Asked whether he felt Travers had the credentials to be a long-term number one at the club, Parker replied: “Yeah, definitely. He has proven that in where he is at this current moment.

“As always, like with any young player, for Travs it’s now consistency, him developing, keep improving and wanting to improve.

“Don’t rest on anything. He can’t afford to do that because there is still so much more he needs to get better at.

“While he has taken himself to a really, really good place, there is still loads of work to be done and he recognises that as well.

“He is our number one and it’s down to him now to keep at the levels he is at.”

Maynooth-born Travers came through the ranks at Cherries having joined the club as a 17-year-old in 2016.

He has linked up with goalkeeping coach Rob Burch at Vitality Stadium this season, following the departure of long-serving Neil Moss.

Asked whether he saw a maturity in Travers, Parker replied: “That position is a tough position and I think if there is one thing you have got to have it’s personality, you’ve got to be ballsy at times and that’s the way it is.

“Certainly, I have seen the development in that. I realise that Travs is a good keeper in terms of his general shot-stopping and everything like that.

“Now he just needs to grow into that position a little bit more. That comes with age, that comes with experience – he is still very, very young so I wouldn’t just expect it to just be there.

“But that’s something that Rob (Burch) is working on with Travs and that’s something Travs is working on. Ny (Orjan Nyland) is pushing him as well.

“There is a good group of keepers here that are all pushing each other to get to where they need to get to really.”
