PHILIP Billing has withdrawn from the Denmark national squad due to illness.

The Cherries midfielder was aiming to make his first international appearance since October 2020, having missed out on a spot in the summer's European Championship.

He earned a recall to Kasper Hjulmand's squad for three upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Scotland, Faroe Islands and Israel, but has now pulled out.

Billing had been an ever-present in the Championship for Cherries this season, scoring twice in four appearances, before missing Saturday's trip to Hull City due to the same issue.

A translated tweet from the DBU, the Danish football authority, read: "Andreas Cornelius and Rasmus Falk are eliminated from the national team squad due to injuries. Philip Billing must also resign due to illness."

Both Billing and goalkeeper Mark Travers were late withdrawals from the Cherries squad at the weekend after feeling under the weather.

It is understood Travers is also likely to withdraw from the Republic of Ireland squad, having been called up for their games in the next couple of weeks, as a precaution.

Discussing the absences of Billing and Travers following Saturday's 0-0 draw at Hull, Cherries boss Scott Parker told BBC Radio Solent: "It wasn’t ideal, but this is the world we live in currently isn’t it?

"This is where it is. Both are okay, both are well."

Cherries have also recently been without Adam Smith due to illness.
