SCOTT Parker expressed his delight at the acquisition of free agent Gary Cahill, insisting: "I think he's going to be a big signing for us."

Cahill, who left Crystal Palace over the summer following the expiration of his contract, has signed up on a one-year deal at Cherries.

The 35-year-old arrives on the back of an illustrious playing career to date, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Europa League and Champions League during his seven-year stay at Chelsea.

Cahill has also had stints at Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers earlier in his career, as well as loan spells at Burnley and Sheffield United.

Asked what centre-back Cahill was like to play against, and also alongside during the pair's time in the England national team, Parker said: "To play against, everything you guys have probably seen, a very difficult opponent.

"To play with, a top professional first and foremost and a very good player.

"This is someone who brings a wealth of experience and massive quality as well really.

"When you’re trying to structure a squad or a group of players to go into a big season, there’s loads of dynamics you’re always trying to fit into that.

"There’s always certain characters or certain traits or certain areas. We’re a young team. I think everyone can see that. A young side and I don’t personally think there’s probably a better player out there that can come into this team and help these young players, help us on the field and the quality that Gary will bring.

"I’m delighted to have him here, because I think he’s going to be a big signing for us."

Asked how tough it was to get the Cahill deal over the line, Parker added: "It was difficult, very difficult because of the stature of Gary.

"Obviously playing in the Premier League for numerous years, those opportunities are still around and still there. Convincing Gary that this was the right place for him and the responsibility and leadership skills we’re going to be asking of him and the quality he’s going to possess on the field for us was what did it obviously. So I’m very, very pleased.

"This is someone who has been around winning things, winning trophies, winning leagues, the biggest accolades in the world.

"The next challenge for him is can he produce performances, can he help develop this team and push this team on to the next step, challenge to win games and try to get promoted this year.

"While you’ve always got a fire in your belly and ambitions and the next challenge you set yourself, that’s always a good place to put yourself, when you’re of the mindset and have the mentality Gary has.

"So he’ll help us this year, no doubt."
