CHERRIES annoucned the capture of experienced goalkeeper Orjan Nyland on a deal until the end of the season - but who is he?

Most of you will be familliar as he is the man in the gloves that saw Cherries relegated from the Premier League, when Hawk-Eye technology went wrong.

For those who aren't familiar, here's a brief overview of his career so far.

Nyland is a 30-year-old Norwegian international goalkeeper, standing at 6foot 4’ tall.

International career

Born in Volda, Norway, on September 10 1990, Nyland represented his country at youth level from the age of 17 up to under-21s – before making his senior debut in 2013.

During the 2013 European Under-21 Football Championship, Nyland and his country reached the semi-final, winning a bronze medal, where he was selected in The Guardian’s team of the tournament ahead of tournament winner David De Gea – also included in UEFA’s squad.

He has now been capped 28 times for country.

Pre-Aston Villa

During spells with second division and Tippeligan sides Hodd and Molde respectively, Nyland won the Norwegian Cup three times and the division title once – and was the Tippeligan goalkeeper of the year in 2014 and 2015.

What's remarkable is that Hodd only survived relegation to the Norwegian third division on goal difference - yet won the Norwegian Cup that very same year (2012).

On July 1 2015, Nyland signed a four-year contract with newly promoted Bundesliga side FC Ingolstadt 04 for an undisclosed fee.

Ingolstadt were relegated to the 2. Bundesliga, where he started to work his way into becoming the club’s number one.

English leagues

It was from Ingolstadt where he eventually moved to Championship outfit Aston Villa in 2018, playing 23 league games as the side were promoted back to the Premier League.

He only made seven Premier League appearances for Villa, but did play four times in the EFL Cup as they reached the final before losing against Manchester City.

His Villa spell was ruined by injuries, though, with an Achilles tendon rupture and back injury totalling up to almost a full year of action missed over his time at the club.

In total, he featured in 35 matches for the Birmingham-based side during an almost three-year spell.

In February 2021, he joined and spent the remainder of the campaign with Norwich where he enjoyed his second promotion from the Championship, however he didn’t actually feature in any of the club’s competitive games.

To come?

While the club may still yet bring in the potential loan signing of Freddie Woodman, Nyland offers experience and could potentially usurp Mark Travers as the current number one.

If Woodman does come in, Nyland will be a good character to have in order to guide and lead an otherwise young, inexperienced squad. If Woodman does not, it’s likely he will start a number of games himself while Travers continues to develop.
