"The journey we have been on had been amazing.

"We have had Covid and the rest, let's not forget that.

"We woke up every day over the last month and, if England was playing, it would put everyone in a good mood."

A resident from Bournemouth said: "I'm genuinely gutted. Tonight, and the whole tournament, has been a rollercoaster.

"With what we have gone through over the last 16 months, this has actually put the pride back into the country.

"I don't think we deserved to lose tonight, we played better and had the better chances. But the World Cup is next year and these boys will be back ready and raring to go."

Will Cowen said: "It's a shame it had to end the way it did and I'm sure the whole nation is feeling similar but we played brilliantly the whole tournament so hopefully it's a sign of what's to come."
