JONATHAN Woodgate expressed his love for clean sheets after recording his first shutout at Burnley as Cherries caretaker boss.

Having won 3-2 against Birmingham in the Championship during Woodgate’s first game in temporary charge, the Dorset club sealed a 2-0 victory over the Clarets to progress to the last eight of the FA Cup.

And former centre-back Woodgate, who represented the likes of Newcastle, Tottenham and Real Madrid as a player, insisted his troops “stood up to the fight” to keep the Premier League side at bay.

He told the Daily Echo: “I love clean sheets. As a player and a defender, I used to love coming to away grounds and getting clean sheets.

“The players know that and it was important we got that. It breeds confidence in the dressing room, that was the biggest thing for us.

“It’s a difficult place to come, I thought they all stood up to the fight.”

Cherries were forced into a defensive reshuffle at half-time in Lancashire after Jack Stacey picked up a thigh problem.

That meant on-loan centre-half Cameron Carter-Vickers switched to right-back for the second period.

“I know Cameron can play there and do a job for us, we looked just as solid when Cameron went there,” added Woodgate.

“He did a job and I thought when Meps (Chris Mepham) came on as well, he was good. They all played well – especially the back four.”
