JASON Tindall praised the way Mark Travers responded to his mistake against Blackburn Rovers, but insisted: “I’ve got no loyalties to anyone.”

Many fans were keen to see Irishman Travers given the gloves to start in goal following the departure of last season’s first-choice stopper Aaron Ramsdale to Sheffield United.

But the 21-year-old suffered a nightmare when he let a long-range Bradley Johnson effort squirm underneath his gloves and into the net in the first half against Rovers.

Fortunately the mistake did not prove costly as Cherries battled back to win 3-2 to start their Championship campaign, in Tindall’s first game in charge.

Cherries have been linked with signing a new keeper during this transfer window, and had former Millwall man Jordan Archer in on trial during pre-season.

Asmir Begovic has also returned to the club, but after he suffered an injury on the eve of the clash with Blackburn, Travers was handed the gloves with youngster Will Dennis named on the bench.

Having enjoyed a constant rise since his time at Cherries, also going on to represent Republic of Ireland, the mistake against Rovers was Travers’s first major setback on the pitch for the club.

Asked for his assessment of how the Maynooth-born man responded after conceding to Johnson’s 42nd minute strike, Tindall told the Daily Echo: “I think it was evident for everybody to see how he reacted to that moment. For such a young guy, to react in the way he did and after that deliver a very good performance, I think that just showed what a level-headed guy he is and how he does react to mistakes.

“It happens. I think everyone on a football pitch makes mistakes.

“Unfortunately when it happens to a goalkeeper, nine times out of 10 they are very costly. But we think the world of Mark. He’s got a great future ahead of him.”

Begovic, who signed for £10million from Chelsea in 2017, could return to contention for tomorrow’s Carabao Cup clash with Crystal Palace after a dead leg kept him out against Blackburn.

Quizzed on if Travers was now his number one or if 33-year-old Begovic could reclaim the spot he lost in April 2019, Tindall added: “I’ve got no number one goalkeeper, like I’ve got no number one midfielder, striker or defender.

“At the end of the day, I will always pick what I feel is the best team to go and deliver a winning performance.

“I’ve said this to all the guys – I’m going to judge every guy every day in training and in games with the performances they deliver.

“I’ve got no favourites.

“I’ve got no loyalties to anyone. At the end of the day, players have got to earn their place in the side and when they get that opportunity they’ve got to go out there and do well.”
