MELISSA Courtney-Bryant claimed a 1,500m personal best as she featured in a British clean sweep in the Stockholm Diamond League meeting, reports Nigel Harding.

Running in the empty Olympic Stadium, the Poole Athletic Club star was placed sixth at the bell.

Grinding out a 62-second final lap, however, she overhauled the American Shannon Rowbury, Australia’s Jessica Hull and the Kenyan Winny Chebet.

Courtney-Bryant was narrowly pipped for second by Laura Weightman, while a dominant Laura Muir set the fastest time so far this year, but the trio all left Eilish McColgan and double World 5,000m champion Hellen Obiri trailing.

Courtney-Bryant clocked 4:01.81, an improvement of 1.63 seconds on her previous best set when gaining the Commonwealth Games bronze medal in 2018.

This places her 17th on the British women’s all-time list. She may now have the capacity to break four minutes as Muir described conditions as ‘really windy’.

Courtney-Bryant followed up with a 4:05.07 victory over Jessica Hull in Gothenburg.
