TOM Vavrecka's second-half wonder goal paved the way for Wimborne Town to claim pole position in the Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division.

Vavrecka's stunning strike, coupled with Scott Joyce's 26th league goal of the season, saw the Magpies leapfrog Dorset rivals Poole Town.

The Dolphins' trip to Ringwood was postponed, while Poppies' clash at Romsey, Hamworthy United's visit to Brockenhurst and Christchurch's encounter at Alresford also fell foul of the weather.

And after Cuthbury had survived a pitch inspection, the Wimborne faithful were treated to a memorable 69th minute opener from Vavrecka.

"It was a brilliant individual goal," said Magpies boss Christer Warren. "Tommy burst through from 40 yards, took the ball past a defender and drilled an angled shot into the far corner. It was a great strike and a fully deserved goal."

Warren added: "Nobody is getting carried away because you can't win the league in November. We've just got to make sure we're in the pack towards the end of the season.

"It's nice but we've got to stay there now. We've got some hard games coming up and we've got to keep doing what we've been doing. If we keep showing the same desire and commitment then hopefully we should be there or thereabouts.

"If anything, I think we're probably a little bit ahead of ourselves. We're digging in and working really hard for one another and we've got a really good team spirit. When you go on a roll, it's a confidence thing and you believe you're going to win all the time."

Joyce doubled Wimborne's lead when he finished coolly 12 minutes from time to maintain his hot streak.

"The first half was very poor," admitted Warren. "It was a very lethargic performance and the tempo was too slow.

"We had a chat about it at half-time and played some really good stuff after the break. We opened them up and fully deserved our victory."
