OAKMEADIANS number eight Hayden Hokianga praised their "defence" in the final 10 minutes as they held out for a nail-biting 14-12 home win over Wootton Bassett.

The Meyrick Parkers had lost 14-13 at Wootton Bassett in Southern Counties South in their previous game.

When they trailed 5-0 at half time it looked as though they might bow out of the EDF Energy Senior Vase at the third round stage.

But Tom Stradwick scored two tries from catch and drive lineouts in the opening 20 minutes of the second period that Jamie Tryska converted to put Oaks 14-5 ahead.

Then, with Tim Flower and Sevi Kurawaka sin-binned for the last 10 minutes, the 13-man Dorset side restricted Wootton Bassett to just one converted try in the dying moments to book a place in the last 64.

Hokianga said: "We put in a really good defensive effort near the end to make sure we won.

"We're quite pleased we held them out because it was the first time Wootton Bassett had lost all season.

"We promised ourselves we wouldn't lose to them at home, and the boys came good on the promise.

"We're coming together pretty well now and our composure and control of the game was key in the end."

Hokianga praised flanker Jack Hennings and fly half Tryska for their impressive individual performances.

The number eight believes the Vase triumph should give mid-table Oaks more confidence in the league.

Hokianga added: It's just inconsistency with us. We can beat teams like Wootton Bassett but struggle against other sides.

"This shows we are more than capable of being nearer the top."

Oaks' reward is a long fourth round trip to Devonport Services on December 8 after the Plymouth-based side defeated Tiverton 35-10 away.

Wimborne lost 24-20 at Avonmouth Old Boy's in the third round.
