DORSET star Georgia Hall is hoping to raise thousands of pounds to help NHS workers serving on the front line in the fight against COVID-19 by auctioning off a one-of-a-kind piece of memorabilia.

The world number 39, who is now based near Parkstone, has decided to take bids on her tour bag used during the 2018 US Women’s Open.

She launched the auction on her social media channels on Wednesday, with a bid of £1,000 having already come in for the unique item. Bidding is taking place until midday on Easter Sunday.

All proceeds are set to go to the Support NHS Critical Care Staff initiative, a foundation set up to help NHS workers with food and support at St Georges Hospital in London.

Hall told the Daily Echo: “With what is going on at the moment I was just trying to think of ways that I could help.

“I have a tour bag every year that I use but for the US Open they make this special edition one for the type of course we play and it’s completely different for the rest of the year. Players only use it for that tournament.

“I picked that one because it’s different. You can’t buy them or get them anywhere else. Hopefully that will be able to have higher bids because it’s a rare item.

“It looks really cool and it’s really different. It would be much better used by someone buying it and the proceeds going to everyone that’s helping in the NHS.

“I wanted to help the NHS because people are working tirelessly to help everyone that is in need at the moment.

“They are doing an incredible job – people are showing their support by clapping for them over the past couple of weeks, which I have been doing. I just wanted to help them out as much as I could.

“London has been the most populated place where they were having cases. It would be busier because of the amount of people up there.

“NHS Critical Care staff - I think it’s incredible what they are doing – so I wanted to help them out.”

While using the Callaway bag, Hall finished in a tie for 34th in the major championship on the Champions Course in Houston.

The former Canford Kid admitted she had been taken back by the amount of reaction the auction had already received on social media.

“I had loads of tweets within half an hour of putting it on,” said the 23-year-old.

“It’s doing really well so far but it’s just a case of doing whatever I can to help.

“However much it goes for – 100 per cent of it will go to the people working in the hospital. I would love it to go for a load of money.

“People can just comment their bid below on Twitter or Instagram. Whoever has the highest bid – my management and I will contact them directly. They will get the bag sent to them as soon as the virus outbreak is over.

“I think it’s at £1,000 at the moment, which is not too bad for a day. To provide food for workers, I think that’s quite a lot of food!

“Fingers crossed it will get higher but it’s not a bad start.”
