ON THIS DAY – March 31 2007

DAVID McGoldrick netted his fourth goal in seven games as Cherries took a giant step towards securing their League One safety with a 2-0 win at Rotherham.

His stunning 30-yard effort after 13 minutes put Cherries on course for their third successive league win as Kevin Bond’s charges climbed eight points clear of the drop zone.

The 19-year-old also had a hand in Cherries’ second goal when James Hayter followed up to score after his header from Darren Anderton’s 28th-minute corner had been saved.

McGoldrick has made a huge impact since joining Cherries from Southampton and Bond says he would welcome him back for an extended loan next season.

Bond told the Daily Echo: “I would like it to be a possibility, but I’m not sure either David or Southampton will think the same.

“David is at a Championship club and wants to play for them at that level and that’s what I want for him as well.”

Victory ensured Cherries moved to 16th in the League One table.
