TRIES from Sam Hardcastle, Ben Russell and James Griffiths proved not enough as Bournemouth were humbled at home by National Two South rivals Clifton.

Lions sunk to the bottom of the table following a 43-17 defeat to the Bristol-based outfit and fellow strugglers Sutton & Epsom overcame Barnes 23-17 at home.

The hosts were slow out of the blocks at Chapel Gate on Saturday, conceding tries to Clifton’s Harry Bate (2) and Bentley Halpin inside the opening 23 minutes.

Veteran Hardcastle and Russell then responded to put the game in the balance at 15-10 in favour of the visitors at the break.

But Clifton powered away with four tries following the interval – Griffiths’s late score proved consolation for the hosts.

In Hampshire Premier, tries from Dalton Thomas, Ryan Morrell (2), Sam Bew and Ben Steers earned New Milton a 28-8 home victory over Bognor.
