BRANSGORE star Scott Mitchell sealed a dramatic 5-4 victory over Scott Waites to keep alive his BDO World Championship dream.

The 2015 champion recorded a three-dart of average of 92.53 to progress to the last four, where he will meet Wales’s Wayne Warren at the O2 in London tomorrow.

Reacting to the victory over two-time winner and close friend Waites, Mitchell said: “I just kept telling myself ‘get yourself one dart at a double to win it, and you know you have big enough cojones to win it’.

“Luckily that went my way.”

Having only dropped one set in his previous two rounds, Mitchell broke the Waites throw by taking out 56 to claim the opening set in the capital.

But Yorkshireman Waites bounced back with three consecutive legs – finishing on a 14-darter to level up the contest.

Double-14 was then 16th seed Waites’s friend as he closed out the third to gain the upper hand for the first time in the match.

Mitchell then took advantage in the fourth set, levelling on tops after Waites hit double-nine when looking to find double-12.

Waites strolled to the fifth before some heroics from the Dorset star saw him level the contest at 3-3.

Staring down the barrel of a two-set deficit, Mitchell fired in a 180 to leave tops, before pinning double-10 to set up a tense finale.

Tops continued to be Mitchell’s ally as he rattled off three straight legs to reach the brink at 4-3 in sets.

Bransgore ace Mitchell wired the bull having attempted a 164 checkout in set eight, leaving Waites to mop up double-16 to make it 4-4 and ensure the contest went to a one-leg shootout.

But it was Mitchell who prevailed, taking out 64 with one shot at tops to seal the match.

“It’s really hard to play somebody who is that much of a friend,” the Dorset thrower added.

“It affects your game a little bit but at the same time it lifts your game a little bit because you think ‘I’m not letting you have this, I’m going to go and have a go’.”
