CHRIS Billam-Smith revealed how an “inspiring” circuit session at former world champion Barry McGuigan’s house had helped him prepare for his tilt at the Commonwealth title.

The Bournemouth cruiserweight, who is managed by the international and world boxing hall of famer - and trained by his son Shane - took his preparation to McGuigan’s basement in Kent.

Billam-Smith was joined by stablemate and Olympic gold medallist Luke Campbell for the session, ahead of the Dorset fighter’s clash with Craig Glover in Liverpool on Saturday.

Legend McGuigan’s record as a professional stood at an impressive 32 wins from 35 fights, with 28 victories coming inside the scheduled distance.

Quizzed on the training at the home of the famous Clones Cyclone, Billam-Smith told the Daily Echo: “It was good. It gave lots of inspiration and Shane was saying how he used to train down there with his dad and his dad trained down there a little bit as well.

“There were some cool pictures on the walls of Barry. He’s got photos with legends of the game. He is a legend himself.

“It’s nice when you get to know him and you see him every day, you get used to him being around.

“But when you get little reminders like that, you see he has been in training camps with Roberto Duran – an absolute legend of the game.

“I had been to his house before but I had never been to the downstairs where he has his gym set up.

“It was an inspiring circuit but a hard circuit.”

Avid Cherries fan Billam-Smith is looking to bounce back after defeat to Richard Riakporhe in London back in July.

He is expecting a hostile reaction from the crowd when he faces off with Glover in the Merseysider’s home city.

“At the end of the day it’s you and him in there,” he added. “They (the home fans) aren’t in there with you. They can’t help and I will be looking to silence them on Saturday night.”
