PIRATES co-promoter Danny Ford believes Eurosport’s new five-year TV deal to cover British Speedway is “only a positive thing for the sport”.

The broadcaster has secured exclusive live rights to show the SGB Premiership and Championship Leagues from 2020.

Eurosport will broadcast live on-site coverage from 18 rounds across the SGB Premiership next season.

The likes of BT Sport and Sky Sports had previously aired the competition.

And despite Pirates expecting to drop down to the second tier in 2020 with a TV appearance unlikely, Ford was pleased to see speedway continuing to be shown to a mass audience.

He told the Daily Echo: “The deal Eurosport is coming in with is absolutely fantastic. They seem incredibly keen to work with British speedway and it’s only a positive thing.

“It’s an improved deal on what we had been on with BT. We are massively thankful to Eurosport for coming in and supporting British Speedway.

“Although we (Pirates) won’t see the full benefits of it next year, the deal seems absolutely fantastic.”

Pirates last week announced their intention to become a Championship club, with the move expected to be ratified at next month’s British Speedway Promoters’ Association AGM.
