DAN Gosling described as a “wonder goal” Callum Wilson’s strike against West Ham and likened it to a famous fizzer from Wayne Rooney.

Wilson’s rasping half-volley flew into the top corner after 53 minutes to set Cherries on course for a 2-0 victory at Vitality Stadium.

Gosling compared Wilson’s blistering effort to Rooney’s famous volley against Newcastle at Old Trafford in April 2005.

Wilson played alongside Rooney for England in November when making his senior international debut against the United States.

The finish against the Hammers came as a shock to Cherries midfielder Gosling, who insisted he had never seen his team-mate convert such an effort before.

He told the Daily Echo: “I have been training with Callum for four years now and I don’t think he has done that in training!

“I was straight behind it on the halfway line. Credit to him, it was a fantastic strike.

“It was a wonder goal and reminded me straight away of Wayne Rooney against Newcastle all those years ago.

“Hopefully, it’s not a one off. Those are special goals and it’s one he will remember for a long time.

“These games are very tight and a moment of brilliance from either side was going to win it.

“The win will give us huge confidence. It was a big result and much needed.”

Joshua King tapped home a second late on to end a run of five games without a win for Eddie Howe’s men.

Both sides took a while to get going in a nervous opening 45 minutes.

But Gosling believes Cherries were good value for their win, despite having less than 39 per cent possession.

He said: “There was a bit of relief. We have been on a bad run and everybody knows that. We usually go through one of them per season.

“But, hopefully, this can be the start of a good run and we can start looking up the table.

“The sides were even (in the first half), the tempo was quite slow and there wasn’t too much space. It was tough for both sides to break down each other.

“We had a chance with Brooksy and his header at the back post. On another day that may have gone in and opened up the game a bit more.

“We needed to be a bit better in the final third and in the second half we were probably good for the goals and defended very well.

“We had a bit of luck with big Andy Carroll putting his chance over the bar. In recent weeks, stuff like that has gone against us.

“To be on the right side of the result is a fantastic credit to all the boys and all the work we have been doing in the past few weeks.”
