CHERRIES boss Eddie Howe revealed his pride at seeing Kieran Trippier thrive on the international stage – having snapped him up as a youngster at Burnley.

The England star linked up with Howe at Turf Moor as a 20-year-old, initially on loan from Manchester City in July 2011.

Six months later, Trippier made the move permanent and went on to play 185 games for the Clarets.

Signed by Spurs for a bargain £3.5million in 2015, the Bury-born full-back etched his name in the history books during England’s 2018 World Cup campaign.

The 28-year-old became only the third Englishman in history to score in a World Cup semi-final – joining Bobby Charlton and Gary Lineker.

Trippier could face Howe’s men when Cherries on Boxing Day make the trip to Wembley to take on Spurs (3pm).

Asked about Trippier ahead of the contest, Howe told the Daily Echo: “I’m so proud of his development and so pleased for him.

“He is a great lad and I really enjoyed working with him.

“He was a positive guy, wanted to do well, had a point to prove and was desperate to succeed.

“To see him playing in the World Cup was brilliant for him and his family.”

Trippier’s famous World Cup moment came after just five minutes of the last-four clash with Croatia at Luzhniki Stadium.

He struck an unstoppable free-kick which flew past keeper Danijel Subasic and sparked celebrations across England.

But Howe had seen the attack-minded full-back deliver the goods in Lancashire eight years previously.

“I was so pleased for him because you see the hard work that goes into the player,” added the Cherries boss.

“His dedication to improve his crossing and work on his free-kicks – he used to do that a lot at Burnley.

“He is one of the best crossers of the ball I have ever worked with – without a doubt.

“It was natural to him and he set up so many goals for us.”
