EDDIE Howe believes it will be “a matter of time” before Callum Wilson earns a senior England call – providing he continues to terrorise Premier League defences.

Cherries striker Wilson has been involved in more top-flight goals than any other Englishman this season, racking up five goals and four assists in 10 league games.

The former Coventry City ace added two goals to his tally in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Fulham, first coolly stroking home a penalty he won himself before rounding off the scoring with an emphatic first-time strike.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate gave Wilson his England under-21s debut four years ago and is soon due to name his squad for next month’s clashes with the United States and Croatia.

Asked about Wilson’s prospects of a senior call, Howe said: “He is certainly going to be in Gareth’s mind, I have no doubt about that.

“Callum just has to keep doing what he is doing. If he continues to score and play well, then I think it will only be a matter of time.

“The responsibility is with him to take care of his form for us.

“I think he is in a good place. In every game he has had chances and that is what is so likeable about Callum – he wants to score.

“His movement is very good, he’s very unselfish and when he got his moments today he was very efficient.

“When he is in a good frame of mind, he will take most chances and he is a big player for the team.

“We certainly need our strikers to score goals so it was a great day for him.”

Wilson’s goals came either side of a low strike from Welsh winger David Brooks, who now has three goals in his past four appearances.

And Howe believes the confidence of Brooks, a £10million summer recruit from Sheffield United, is skyrocketing.

Howe said: “We are very pleased with him. You never know when you sign a player how long that period will be when they have to adapt and get to know you.

“A big thing for us is our fitness levels and the defensive responsibility we ask our wide players to take and he has taken to it so quickly.

“There was very minimal dialogue between me and him and minimal video analysis – he just seemed a natural for our team.

“It is all very well having the knowledge, you also need the technical ability to produce the performances and he has done that.

“With every goal, his confidence is building and he really feels he deserves to play at this level.

“He has been very confident and hasn’t been overawed. He doesn’t get overexcited.

“He gets in on a Monday and wants to get back to work and that is important because most potential pitfalls are extreme overreactions to success. He is very level-headed.”
