HEAVY-SCORING Scott Mitchell insisted he would be back to claim the Winmau World Masters title after recording his highest stage average.

The Bransgore thrower reached the last four in Bridlington before being defeated 5-2 in sets by world champion Glen Durrant.

Scotty Dog averaged 99.14 in the loss against the Middlesbrough thrower.

He had gone into the last-four having hammered Dave Copley 4-0 with a 108.72 three-dart total.

The Dorset star told the Daily Echo: “I really want to add the World Masters to being world champion, they are the two you really want to have on your CV before you finish. Hopefully we will go again next year and try to get it then.

“Once I got to the quarter-final it was a case of trying to make sure I was peaking, getting used to things and being happy and comfortable.

“Doing a 108 average against Dave, who had never been in the quarters before, it seemed a horrible thing but I just felt really comfortable by then and was playing really well.

“It was my highest average on stage and there was no better place to do it.”

He added: “I averaged just under a ton in the following game but it just got away from me. I had a couple of places where I didn’t quite hit a double when I needed to.

“You have to hand it to Glen, he is a two-time world champion and jumped on a couple of mistakes, as well as playing outstandingly well himself.

“The score line probably flattered him a little but I’m not worried about what it looked like.

“Having been world champion myself, the hardest thing for Glen is he is everyone’s rival, it doesn’t matter where you are in the rankings, he is the man to beat.

“You have to do something special to beat him, he doesn’t give games away these days so fair play to him. You just have to say he was better on the day but I will try to get him next time.”

Durrant went on to lose the final 6-4 to Adam Smith-Neale.

Mitchell is next week set to compete at the Turkish Open.
