BOSS Matty Holmes felt Wimborne Town let “out of jail” Dorset rivals Dorchester as his side bowed out of the FA Cup.

Having conceded a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at KoolPak Stadium on Saturday, a second-half blitz meant Wimborne were beaten 3-0 in the first qualifying round replay at the Avenue.

Despite Luke Burbidge and Jack Lovell going close during the opening period for Holmes’s men, Billy Lowes, Aaron Rodriguez and Luke Winsper all struck within 18-minutes to send out the visitors.

Dorchester assistant Trevor Senior admitted the scoreline “flattered” his troops, a belief strongly agreed with by the Wimborne manager.

Holmes told the Daily Echo: “With us not finishing them off on Saturday, we let them out of jail.

“We absolutely dominated in the first half. We started off really positively, created chances and set up really well.

“There was nothing wrong at half-time apart from the fact we didn’t score a couple of goals.

“They then had an 18-minute spell and we lost shape. We tried to change it and affect the game to get back into the tie, but we collapsed.

“I don’t think they played particularly great and they would admit that. I think they would find themselves very lucky and fortunate to be in the next round.”

Wimborne conceded four times during the opening period at home against Dorchester in Southern League South last month.

And the Cuthbury boss admitted his side’s defensive fragility was becoming a concern.

“At this level, if you don’t defend properly and switch on then you are going to get punished,” he added.

“We were punished (on Tuesday) for a midfield runner going in the box, by sloppy defending on the edge of the box and getting too deep.

“They are the basics, it’s more about staying in the games and, hopefully, the ability will come through.”

The result meant Wimborne missed out on a considerable £6,000 in prizemoney and will not go on to face Tiverton Town in the next round.

Magpies will once again be without star striker Toby Holmes for Saturday’s trip to Basingstoke Town (3pm).

Lewis Tallack may also be unavailable to due work commitments, Luke Holmes could be back on the bench.

Magpies: Benfield, Lee, Maybury, Davidson, Arnold, Kellaway (Francis, 71), Stokoe, Penny (Owen, 85), Young (Shepherd, 79), Burbidge, Lovell. Unused subs: Okumu, Walsh (g/k).
