ASMIR Begovic says he has no plans to call time on his international career despite being cold shouldered by new Bosnia and Herzegovina manager Robert Prosinečki.

Begovic was left out of Prosinečki’s squad for UEFA Nations League matches against Northern Ireland on Saturday and Austria a week today (11 Sept).

A regular under previous head coaches Safet Sušić and Mehmed Baždarević, the Cherries goalkeeper has yet to feature since Prosinečki took charge in January.

Begovic, capped 61 times by his country, was forced to withdraw from the squad for friendlies against Bulgaria and Senegal in March due to a back injury.

And the 31-year-old, who has been ever present for Cherries in the Premier League, also missed games against Montenegro and South Korea in June.

Speaking at a press conference after announcing his latest squad, Prosinečki indicated Begovic was still in his plans but said there were “certain rules” and that the team “must be respected”.

A translation of part of Prosinečki’s interview, which was published by Bosnian sports website BiH.ba, read: "We did not call him for two reasons.

“When we went to Bulgaria, we had problems and said that it was okay not to come. Later, we had a trip to South Korea and did not come again. That is why we have omitted this time.

“I do not like the players who choose games. It is standard in the club and quality, but the team must be respected.”

Begovic appeared in all 10 of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s World Cup qualifiers as they finished third in Group H behind Belgium and Greece.

He also featured in all three of his country's group matches during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and his last appearance was against Estonia in their final qualifier in October 2017.

In his absence, the goalkeeping duties have been shared between Ibrahim Šehić, who plays for Turkish outfit BB Erzurumspor, and Kenan Pirić, who plays in Slovenia for Maribor.

Begovic, speaking in an exclusive interview with the Daily Echo, said: “I wasn’t in the squad this time.

"I’ll keep working hard and see what happens and, hopefully, get called up for the next games.

“I’d like to keep playing while I feel good but these are the manager’s choices and that’s just the way it goes.

“I’ve had a good nine or 10 years. The manager has his reasons for what he wants to do and that’s just the way football goes. I will keep working hard, keep playing for my club and see what happens.”

A quartet of Cherries first-team players joined their respective countries on international duty following the 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday.

Joshua King is in the Norway squad for Nations League games against Cyprus (September 6) and Bulgaria (September 9), while David Brooks was named by Wales for matches in the same competition against Republic of Ireland (September 6) and Denmark (September 9).

Nathan Ake is in the Netherlands squad for a friendly against Peru (September 6) and a Nations League clash against world champions France (September 9).

And Ryan Fraser is part of the Scotland squad for a friendly against Belgium (September 7) and their opening Nations League group encounter with Albania (September 10).
