WIMBORNE were edged out 24-22 in a South West One East thriller against promoted Beaconsfield at Leigh Park.
The Minstermen struggled in the early stages of the opening-day clash and found themselves 16-0 down due to a converted try and three penalties.
The hosts hit back when Paul Roberts was on the end of a short pass from Jason Booth and scored under the posts.
The try was converted by Ryan Morrell, who also slotted a penalty to bring his side within six points at the break.
A penalty and a try after the restart seemingly put Beaconsfield back in control but Lewis Munster came in off the wing to touch down, with Max Tipping converting.
In a grandstand finish, Miles Corbin scored wide out following good work by the forwards but the crucial conversion drifted wide.
Minstermen: Davies, Kimber, Edwards, Best, Foley, Degeura, Corbin, King, Tipping, Booth, Munster, Mason, Hamer, Morrell, Roberts. Replacements: Young, Taylor, Mills.
